Gary Paulson had spent a very difficult childhood while he was living with his alcoholic parents. At the age of fourteen, he left home and ran away. Having left his home, he began to travel with a carnival. During his travel with the carnival he got a sense of adventure which he constantly maintained throughout his life. During his adventures, to survive in this difficult world, he did several odd jobs. With the help of these odd jobs, he enabled himself to pursue his writing career on the side.
