When Mr. George F. Masterman, an ex-army surgeon of the British army, was hired by Carlos Lopez to work in the almost unknown Paraguay, he never imagined that he would be in the middle of a terrible war, accused of treason and tortured. Although he helped the Paraguayans in the war effort working in field hospitals, he was unjustly accused of treason, imprisoned and tortured by Lopez, but luckily survived to tell the tale. It is the story of the Paraguayan War (1865-1870) told by a non-military.
