This traditional American folk song has been recorded by among others Bob Dylan, Judy Garland, Tom Waits, Harry Belafonte, Glen Campbell, Bing Crosby, Keith Jarrett, Van Morrison and Bruce Springsteen. It is of unknown origin though it is said to have originated with French voyageurs traveling down the Missouri River.
