In the spring of 1953, ten year old George was an orphan and living happily in his apartment in Greenwich Village with his fifteen year old friend, Sally. Their life was, happily, largely free of grownups. There was no one to tell George what to do or what not to do.
This all changed when Linda Hopkins knocked on his door one Saturday morning. Even Sally could see the remarkable likeness between George and Linda. George had thought maybe Luke Hopkins might be his father – now he knew for sure. Mr. Hopkins wasn’t dead so George wasn’t an orphan after all. The world was crawling with George’s sisters. Not only was there Linda, but Linda had three sisters in San Francisco and his mother had a daughter living with her grandparents in New Jersey.
Grownups increasing intrude on the comfortable and busy lives of George and Sally, not that they interfered with his life in the fourth grade or his adventures in Harlem, Central Park and the Staten Island Ferry. It wasn’t too bad until Mr. Hopkins gave George an ultimatum – go to San Francisco or go to an orphanage. George chose California, even though he really didn’t want to go. Worse yet, would Mr. Hopkins ever let him return to his beloved New York?
Book 3 of the Greenwich Village Series.
