I live in “a cabin in the woods”; in fact, I’ve written a book by that title. My dream was to be a writer and live close to nature as I did when I was a child. I now live off the grid and live almost as “green” as you can get. I use only solar electric to power our home.
I have been living in a total solar electric home for nearly twenty years now. In 1998, I built a small cabin in the woods that was off the power grid. To be a writer and live in a cabin in the woods had been my dream for many years. I began writing poems in 1978 and my first novel in 1985. It took a long time and many trials and tribulations to achieve my goal.
Shortly after I built the small house, I installed three solar panels, which powered my 12-volt DC electrical system. Several years later, I upgraded the system and changed it from a 12-volt DC system to an AC electrical system.
Nearly everyone that visits my house or I talk to about having solar electric asks the same question, “How does that work?” I therefore decided to write this small 9,000-word book and explain it.
There are many great benefits of having a solar electric home; there are also some drawbacks. The greatest benefit is not to have an electric bill to pay each month.
It seems today everyone is talking about “going green”. Solar power has zero pollution. Sunshine is free and you can count on it the majority of the time. You will never have to worry about the sun not producing as much energy as it did the day before, going out and never shining again, going on strike or charging more for its services.
When you count on the sun for your energy needs you are your own electrical company and you will not have to count on someone else to supply electrical power to your home.
