On February 2, 1943 the fascist German 6th Army surrendered to the Soviet Red Army after being defeated in what would go down in history as the bloodiest battle of all time.

Over 2,000,000 people (including at least 50,000 Soviet civilians) were killed in the months long battle. By the end, the population of Stalingrad – which was renamed Volgograd in 1961 as a part of Nikita Khruschev's "De-Stalinization" program – had fallen from 850,000 to just 1,500.

The Red Army's victory, which was made possible by the Soviet people's bravery and selfless sacrifice and the unbreakable spirit of socialism, dealt a decisive blow to the Nazis from which they were never able to recover.
