In 1911, the day after breaking ground for his newest hotel in Cape May, NJ, Bently Clifford Cameron's life is shattered when his home is destroyed in an explosion, killing his wife and son. He believes it is his fault, tumbles into clinical depression, and attempts suicide. A chance encounter with hobo Jeffrey Phipps, an ex-college professor, introduces him to a different world.
Bently comes to believe that the challenge of hoboing might take his mind off the tragedy and help cure his depression. He goes "on the road" with Jeffrey and travels throughout the Northeast. Their experiences include the many aspects typical of hoboism, both negative, and positive, and Bently returns home a better man.
