Tom Boyle, an out of work teacher and 80s hair-metal fan, has been reduced to sleeping on his younger brother’s friend’s couch in San Diego. Unhappy and feeling emasculated, Tom applies for a teaching position in Singapore and to his surprise, gets the job.
At first, Tom finds many aspects of life in Singapore exasperating. His life is complicated by having two roommates who hate each other.
Life there improves markedly, once he begins an affair with a married woman, Karen, stuck in a loveless marriage whose father is a dangerous man working for the Ministry of Intelligence. She begins to shower Tom with gifts, such as Lasik surgery and an expensive watch.
On a short trip to Indonesia, the blithely unaware Tom is chased by a group of Jemma Islamiya militants who try to kill him. He manages to escape.
After carrying on their romance for a few months, they are caught and Tom Boyle is threatened by the angry father and the philandering husband. Stubborn and foolhardy, the two continue to see each other until Karen’s daughter is taken away from her and Tom is kidnapped and taken to Malaysia. Luckily for him, he is released.
Determined to enjoy himself on one last trip before he returns to couch surfing in California, Tom flies to Bali.
