In the spirit of Sir Edwin Landseer and Rosa Bonheur, his mentors, John Frederick Tayler began a life-long career in painting animals, pastoral scenes, costumes and accessories of eighteenth-century stag hunts as well as others with incidents of contemporary sport in the highlands of Scotland. Almost all of them in watercolor. This book, originally published in 1885, features eighteen of our most familiar animals in full-color watercolor illustrations along with suggestions for how to paint them. The book and its illustrations have been revised and updated to, hopefully, bring the reader a delightful experience in trying his or her hand at painting them and perhaps going beyond Mr. Tayler's interpretations and adding their own, as was his desire.
