The first assault on ProgressWorld Elegaia is a failure.
Ground Private Parc Parvel is marooned, cut off from his platoon and unsure if he'll ever get home. His only friend is Suldrun Andis, a woman who dreams of escaping to the stars. She's willing to help Parvel contact the fleet he hopes is still waiting in orbit -- although everything indicates it was destroyed along with the drop ships -- if he agrees to take her with him when he leaves.
According to Suldrun, they must travel to the mountain where the Lady Alia lives, also the source of the energy weapons that wiped out the assault. Only Lady Alia has the means to contact anyone off-world.
Between them and the mountain waits violent kingdoms, ancient monsters, and the possibility that Parvel may come to love this new world more than the slums he left.
Parvel can't promise anything, but he's out of options.
