Unified and at peace, the Earth dedicated itself to science and space exploration, discovering Tarilian, an inhabited planet unexpectedly close at hand. Relations between the two worlds began courteously, but a pointless rivalry quickly developed, undermining the friendship between Terrans and Tarilians. An unfortunate diplomatic incident made interplanetary relations even worse; the solution to the impasse is found in the Swan, a solar-powered sailboat that is one of the most advanced floating bio labs on the planet. The Swan is also the home of the Melbourne family: the parents, Doris and Henry, are the marine biologists in charge of the ship; their children are its irrepressible crew.
