A collection of short stories: "The Crystal Egg", "The Star", "A Story of the Stone Age", "A Story of the Days to Come" & "The Man who could Work Miracles".
Tales of Space and Time collects together two novellas and three short stories by the great science fiction writer H. G. Wells. First published in 1899, this absorbing and stimulating read contains The Crystal Egg (short story), The Star (short story), A Story of the Stone Age (novella), A Story of the Days To Come (novella), and The Man Who Could Work Miracles (short story).
The first two stories, The Crystal Egg, and the Star, resemble the works of Edgar Allan Poe. The crystal egg simply resembles Poe's writing style, while the Star uses a theme that Poe had used more than once, that the existence of life on earth would be threatened by a near pass of a comet, asteroid or other straying body. The Poe story is called, "The Conversation of Eiros And Charmion." Anyone who would like to compare the two writers would be interested in these two stories. As a side note, Poe's Hans Pfaal, a story about a balloonist, has many resonances in Well's early stories.
The Stone Age story tells the story of a prehistoric man and woman who are first shunned from their tribe and then make amazing discoveries on their own, like how to ride a horse and create tools. One wonders if the author of "Clan of the Cave Bear"

It was first published by Doubleday & McClure Co. in 1899. All the stories had first been published in various monthly periodicals and this was the first volume to collect these stories.
