John Singer Sargent is known as the preeminent portrait artist of his generation. He was an American painter born January 12, 1856 and he lived until April 14, 1925. His parents moved abroad shortly after the death of his older sister when she was to years old.
Sargent studied in Paris and later London. He studied briefly at the Academy of Florence. Later he went on to study with Carolus-Duran.
