Paris, 1792: Recently widowed and penniless, Bea Bidwell joins British naval captain Charles Rutledge to find the gold queen Marie Antoinette supposedly smuggled from Paris prior to the Royal Family's flight. Opposing them is the French Revolutionary government, but also Irish revolutionary Edward Crawford. Her job: to get close to Crawford--by any means. Her only protection: the Bloodstone--a pendant given her by the Gypsy Phuri Dai (Wise One) of supposed magical properties..
A series of escapades during which the bloodstone may--or may not--have demonstrated its power, culminates in Bea being falsely imprisoned in the women's prison of La Samaritaine. She and a young prostitute, Yvonne, escape during the infamous September Massacres. Ultimately, Bea concludes the treasure never left Paris and is hidden in the newly-opened Pantheon. While Rutledge lies wounded, Bea, reunited with the Phuri Dai and her Gypsies, finds and recovers the treasure, then sneaks it from Paris by hiding it in the Gypsy honey wagons used to collect human waste.
