I enjoyed the way the heat from the water seemed to soothe every single bit of stress in my body, so that was probably why I didn’t realize there were people in the hotel room. The bubbles were wonderful, and even though, at eighteen, I still felt a bit childish about enjoying bubble baths (especially since I didn’t get expensive or sultry stuff from salons but used the same bubblegum scented bubble bath I’d used from the time I was six, there was nothing I enjoyed more.
I didn’t have a great deal to be stressed about, at least no more than a normal eighteen year old. I began college the next day. Well, to be accurate I began college in a week but I checked into my dorm room the next day. My parents had flown with me to the new city and we’d spent four days exploring. Now, they were on a plane on their way back to the Midwest, and I was enjoying a bubble bath and trying to wrap my head around my independence.
I had the room until tomorrow, my parents having paid for another night for me. In the morning, I would drive the same rented van I’d used to drop my parents at the airport and start my new life as a student. It was all very exciting and fun but also scary and more than a little unnerving. It never would have occurred to me that anyone would be in my hotel room. My parents had already left, and though they’d had no problem walking right in from their adjoining room they were on a plane.
So when I heard a voice say suddenly, “Holy shit!” it startled the hell out of me. I was on my stomach at the time and I flipped over, sloshing water and bubbles everywhere, and sat bolt upright. When I did I saw a naked boy standing in the bathroom. Time seemed to stop right then. He was older than me. Boy was the wrong word. He was a man. I wasn’t good with ages but he looked like he was in his thirties. I stared at him in shock, and he stared at me in shock.
