The Christmas Furlough follows Robert “Bob” Macklin on his four-week Christmas furlough back to his hometown of Renwood after WWII is over. He is due for a promotion and a great job in Europe if he decides to re-enlist after his furlough.
His best friend Norman “Norm” Schraff is a thirty-year man without a family and has been discharged from the Army. Bob asks him to come home with him, and on the train they inherit three homeless children.
When they arrive in Renwood, Bob finds his small hometown has changed. The stores and businesses are boarded up around the courthouse square due to a giant corporation building a big box One-Stop Store on the outskirts of town. It has lured all the businesses away from downtown Renwood and the town is dying.
Bob tries to help the town regain its downtown Christmas spirit. In the process, his friend Norm falls in love with the three homeless children and Aunt Lou, the woman who is leading the people in decorating downtown Renwood.
Bob, on the other hand, loses Joyce, his beautiful high school sweetheart, when he finds she doesn’t like small town Renwood. She is a big city girl at heart, and longs for the excitement of New York City.
In the process, he gains the love and admiration of another classmate, Hope. He comes to realize he loves Hope and wants to stay in Renwood with her instead of returning to the Army.
