Brenda sat on her oversized couch and sunk into the cushions. She kicked off her heels and rested her feet on the coffee table. Her head still throbbed from the meeting she had and all she wanted was a stiff drink and her shows. She rested for a moment and then slowly got up and walked to her kitchen. She grabbed the bottle of vodka out of the freezer, a glass out of the cabinet and poured herself the drink. She brought the glass to her lips and drank the entire glass. The clear liquid warmed her belly and her entire body shivered just for a second. She smiled, poured herself another glass, grabbed the bottle and walked back to her living room. She sat back on her couch and settled in for the rest of the night. She drank her second drink just as fast as she did with the first one (this was her usual routine) and filled it for the third time. Normally she would stop after three drinks, but with the stress she had been under due to the new Clark merger, she had needed more than three drinks to settle in. Tonight felt like a six drink kind of night. She laughed to herself, picked up her remote and turned on the television. She flipped through the channels and didn’t find anything worth watching and she sighed. She sat the remote next to her and looked up at her ceiling. She brought the glass to her lips again and drank three hearty swallows before sitting up. Brenda grabbed the bottle and was about to pour herself another drink when her house phone rang.
“Hello?”
“Brenda? Is that you?”
“Yes, may I ask who this is?”
“This is Martin. We met today after the meeting.”
“Oh yes, I apologize. I am just tired is all, how are you?”
“Very well. Listen, I know this is a bit awkward but I was wondering if you would like to meet me at Dylan’s for a drink, maybe some dinner?”
“Martin, thank you but I will have to pass.”
“I see, is it because we will be working together soon?”
“No, it isn’t that at all.”
“Would you tell me what it is then?”
“Well to be honest, I just don’t see why a man of your age would even bother to ask a woman my out.”
“Your age? Oh I see, because I am younger I am stuck dating women who are not only immature but will try to take advantage of not only me but my wallet. Yeah I get it. If you must know, I haven’t dated a woman my age since I was sixteen, and that was thirteen years ago. I prefer the company of older women, the conversations are intelligent, and they never talk about the ex who calls them all time as well as a few other things. Look Brenda, I promise if you just give me a chance you will not regret it. I am potty trained so there is no need to worry about a mess; oh did I mention I know how to feed myself also?”
“Hello?”
“Brenda? Is that you?”
“Yes, may I ask who this is?”
