The Language and Structures of English Academic Writing: a coursebook for non-native speakers, volume I, sets out to help non-native speakers to write academic English. The broad range of language structures presented are suitable for use in term papers, essays, dissertations, and longer pieces of published academic work. The book consists of eighteen units. Each is designed to be worked through in periods of about 90 minutes, but if the book is being used in the classroom it is strongly advisable for students to read through each unit carefully beforehand.
The early units provide guidance in writing different types of sentence and clause, and there follow a number of units addressing the use of determiners. Units VIII-X illustrate the many uses of noun clauses for describing the acquisition of knowledge, for making distinctions and recognizing uncertainty. Different ways of expressing purpose and function are illustrated, as are the causative uses of 'have' and 'get', and the various uses of 'suppose'. The language of process and procedure is examined. Different kinds of relative clause are noted and fully illustrated. The main rules governing punctuation are given and practice offered. The final two units include a step-by-step approach to analysis, to the construction of definitions, and to the composing of different kinds of paragraph.
The purpose of The Language and Structures of English Academic Writing is to prepare the upper-intermediate and advanced student with the skills needed for analytical writing. The book contains an extensive index to words, phrases and grammatical terms, as well as an index to the proper names occurring in the main text and its footnotes.
A printable exercise book can be downloaded from within the coursebook via a link that can be found following the Contents page. It contains tasks that accompany the various sections of each unit in the book. Each task provides an opportunity to try out the language structures illustrated in the coursebook and in that way acquire the requisite capabilities. At the back of the exercise book there is a list of English parts of speech, word classes and grammatical terms, with their Japanese equivalents.
