Aelianus is a solider. The best that Rome has ever seen. He has fought in many battles over the years. But now he faces a choice- continue to fight and defend his family and homeland or give up and spend the rest of his days in exile. He had always wanted to fight- from the time he was a little boy all he could remember was getting in scraps with his brothers and other youngsters in the neighbourhood. As he grew up and was eventually recruited into the army, generals recognised his potential and quickly promoted him so that he became a general himself by the age of just twenty-eight. He conquered distant lands and freed foreign slaves. He wanted to abolish slavery throughout the Roman Empire but faced powerful political opposition at home. All he could do was free those in foreign lands who were too far away for the politicians to control. He was, after all, the representative of the Roman army abroad and so could take key decisions.
