    The sergeant glanced between uncle and niece for a moment, savouring their nervous anticipation. “I heard some gossip last night from the old country, put a few things together.” He bent forward to leer in Persapha’s face. “I know who you are. I know whose daughter you are.” He swung towards Odestus. “And pissed as I may be, I can even make a guess as to who you are, Mr Demus.”

    There was a rush of movement. Paralysed by indecision Persapha watched as Odestus raised his hands, fingers twisting in an intricate shape. Kullick caught him by the wrist, turning and twisting his arm in a cruel snap which threw Odestus off balance with his good hand forced up behind his back. The sergeant huffed, breathless and ill-tempered from the brief exertion. “Now, I was only going to ask the girl here for some money, for a secret to be kept. But now, seeing you here ...” He glanced over his shoulder to the city wall; a sentry on the parapet had turned in their direction. “Maybe there’s more money to be had, and others as would pay it. Uncle, eh? Little Dema had no brothers, but I did hear of another name often linked with hers, a little wizard …”
