Enraged at his decision to marry the daughter of a tradesman, Frances Marjoribanks disinherits her nephew, Michael Elliot. Shortly after taking this step, however, Miss Marjoribanks is found dead - poisoned. Police suspect the contents of a mysterious metal flask, sent to Elliot a few days before. But the family and the servants are not convinced of Elliot's guilt and, when the young man is committed for trial, they decide to leave no stone unturned in order to prove his innocence and discover the real culprit.
