When Lady Anne Holyoak, youngest daughter of the impoverished Earl of Claydon, is sold in marriage to Louis Dumetz, a cold, unemotional middle-aged French glassmaker who is one of the wealthiest men in Europe, she thinks that her life could hardly be worse. But after her new husband dies in suspicious circumstances, she realises she is in great danger from Henri Lefevre, Dumetz's cousin, who covets the vast fortune left to her. Fleeing to England knowing that Lefevre will do anything to find her, she is forced to hide in the care of strangers until she reaches Scotland and the dour, embittered Laird of Ardachy.
Will Anne's path ever lead to happiness?
