Just a few short decades ago most Americans would have said that our community is a Christian nation, built upon a Judeo-Christian foundation. While that was true historically and culturally, religious pluralism has grown by leaps and bounds in a short period of time. Today, America has become a spiritual melting pot and home to many different religions. The Eastern religions of Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucius, and Taoism are thriving here and differ greatly in belief and practice from Christianity. It’s often said that “The East is East and the West is West and never the two shall meet.” Well, the two have been meeting for quite some time and many Christians are confused as to the differences. Authors Corduvan, Yandell and Zukeran help sort out the distinctions of Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucsism and Taoism respectively. Also, in this issue of the Areopagus Journal, there is an article on Falon Gong, a Taoist off-shoot that is growing globally. Other related Areopagus issues are Engaging the New Age and Yoga: Stretching the Truth.
