John Charles Ryle (1816 – 1900) was born in Macclesfield, England. He was the oldest son of a private banker. He studied at Eton and at Christ Church, Oxford. He proved to be both an able student and athlete. He was offered a teaching position but declined to pursue politics and eventually Anglican ministry.
He was ordained a priest in 1842 and eventually became the first bishop of Liverpool in 1880. He was a strong supporter of Evangelism and took a negative view of Ritualism.
