He is regarded as one of the most important American philosophical theologians. He studied at Yale, starting at the age of 13. In 1722 he was temporary employed as a pastor in New York City and later as a full time pastor in 1727 in Northampton.
In Northampton he began his well-known career of preaching. In Boston he gave his famous sermon, 'God Glorified in the Work of Redemption, by the Greatness of Man's Dependence upon Him, in the Whole of It'. His sermons were caught up in many revivals from which many people came to the Christian faith.
