Chapters 1-3
The year is 1951. In the wake of the creation of the state of Israel, there has been a string of assassinations on Middle Eastern political figures by Muslim extremists. A.B. Collins is an acclaimed journalist based in Cairo. He is in Jerusalem to meet the reclusive King Abdullah II of Jordan, who has extended the rare opportunity of an interview. A.B.’s contacts in the Israeli intelligence agency, Mossad, have alerted him to the fact that King Abdullah has been reaching out to Israel in an attempt to protect Jordan from its more powerful neighbors, Egypt, Syria, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia, and that he may be in danger.
A.B. is running late for the interview, and as he closes in on the agreed meeting place he finds the entire area surrounded by Jordanian military, preparing the zone for the king’s arrival and keeping back the mobs who are angrily trying to make their way to their daily prayers.
Desperate not to miss this once-in-a-career opportunity, A.B. starts a fight with the crowd, knowing that it will draw the attention of the guards. When the guards rush over to break up the fight, A.B. is able to show them his invitation from the king. Embarrassed, the guards assist him in escaping the mob.
Key Points
- A.B. is a journalist reporting on the Middle East in 1951.
- Mossad believe that King Abdullah II, the reclusive monarch of Jordan, is in danger.
- A.B. has been granted an exclusive interview with King Abdullah II.
