John Charles Ryle was the first Anglican bishop of Liverpool. Ryle was educated at Christ Church, Oxford where he was also a gifted athlete who played cricket and rowed. Ryle was born to a wealthy family and it seemed likely that he would have a career in politics before joining the ministry. Ryle was ordained in 1842.
Ryle supported the evangelical school and was a strong critic of Ritualism. Ryle was a writer as well as a pastor. Ryle’s writing strongly advocates his beliefs yet has a comforting disposition for the reader. This edition of Ryle’s The True Church includes a table of contents.
