Belfast 1942. Troubled times. And opportunistic times, the IRA decides, what with the Brits shipping out for Cairo and green Yanks shipping in to take over Northern Ireland's policing duties.
But an "easy" IRA arms hijacking from the U.S. military goes deadly wrong and G.I.s die. U.S. Army Intelligence Major Amos Burke investigates and uncovers an IRA sympathizer in the ranks, Boston-born orphan, Sergeant Jimmy Scanlon. Major Burke would love to see Jimmy hang.
But then IRA hard men kidnap Claire Stiles, Burke's Belfast-bred fiancée, to use as a bargaining chip. They'll trade her back for explosives.
Suddenly, Jimmy, broken-hearted that he's caused American deaths, sees a chance for redemption, if he can somehow save Claire for the major. And so, a dangerous mission, a mission utterly outside all the rules, begins.
