Vera Vogel is a work of historical fiction, loosely based on the author’s great-grandmother’s experience growing up in Milwaukee on the fringes of the Great War.
After her father and brother die, Vera begins adulthood at an early age, finding work at a nickelodeon to support her grieving mother. Vera’s story is about waking up out of childhood, grief and self-doubt to find strength, love and beauty against the backdrop of a city on the verge of the Roaring Twenties.
The story is told through the lens of Vera’s mentee, Allison. As their unlikely relationship builds throughout their time together, so does Allison’s resolve to preserve Vera’s precious memories.
