The two, family-oriented fishermen took exception to one of their own being harassed by two, despicable leftovers from Prohibition. They took care of matters themselves when realizing the police chief didn’t have enough evidence to bring the scoundrels in with. A local tavern owner was glad to hear about it, having been paying the two extortionists every week since prohibition was repealed. A young man, a friend of the tavern owner and unknown to the two fishermen, didn’t care for the belligerent pair often driving by his landlady’s house for whatever their reason. He also took exception to the manner they treated the tavern owner, knowing his friend didn’t have much choice other than to tolerate it. The fishermen, the tavern owner, the young man, and the police chief were all glad the undesirables were taught a tough lesson and were gone. The young man, having worked on the docks for five years, wasn’t sure they wouldn’t be back.
The young man is the focus of the story. The characters set around him are colorful, and are all contributors to the young man discarding the undeserving loner tag he wore when showing up on the Cape only a year earlier. The young man’s life was finally starting to come together. He turned a garage-shed into a home and proved he was worthy of the construction job he was given. The tavern owner became his best friend, someone he trusted and valued sharing books and conversation with. These accomplishments, made each morning seem a little brighter for the young man. However, the biggest contributor was his recurring dream of a beautiful girl on a dory, whose face was ingrained in his mind. He didn’t know who she was and only hoped someday he would.
The dedication of the two Cape Cod Canal bridges was planned for early summer, six months after the two vulgar visitors were made aware of their unwelcome presence. They had new business with the tavern owner, a score to settle with the two fishermen, and one they had to settle with kid and the old lady, if they happened to find them. Their intrusion that summer day in 1935 was major, and if not for the young man, would have been tragic for the families of the two fishermen he didn’t even know.
