Few of us have escaped the cleverness and persistence of scam artists and fraudsters. They range from the simple telemarketer promising Hawaiian cruises to the billionaire financier promising overwhelming dividends on a non-existing stock or real estate deal. Even more disturbing are the 'for-profit' schools, such as ITT, which promise lucrative employment in fields clearly dominated by professionals with far superior and extensive training from traditional non-profit institutions. With obvious objective to secure millions of dollars in free-flowing government loans, most of these for-profit schools graduate students, now drowning in debt, who cannot find jobs and cannot even transfer their school credits to an accredited school.

Of the more successful, individual, scam artists, we discuss in detail Donald Trump, Dennis Kozlowski, and Allen Stanford. Former Tyco CEO
Kozlowski led a lavish lifestyle. His $30 million New York City apartment was allegedly paid for by the company. (The shower curtains alone, it was revealed in court, cost $6,000.) Tyco also footed half of the $2 million bill for an extravagant birthday party for Kozlowski's second wife in 2001. Disguised as a shareholder meeting, it took place on an Italian island and featured an ice sculpture of the Statue of David urinating Stolichnaya vodka. The bash—which became known as the Tyco Roman Orgy—probably didn't help his case. Kozlowski was sentenced to serve up to 25 years in prison. The ebook details the eccentric buying habits of the former CEO, and how this, alone, led to his conviction.

In a tight economy, more and more people are turning to work-at-home jobs and “business opportunities” to supplement their income. There are many legitimate companies that offer these opportunities in customer service and other areas. People seeking work-at-home jobs and business opportunities need to be aware of scams that can take advantage of consumers. These schemes all have one thing in common: something must be purchased before work can begin. Envelope stuffing is a common work-at-home scheme. Promoters usually advertise that, for a small fee, they will tell you how to earn money by stuffing envelopes. However, the consumer usually only receives a list of businesses to contact about job opportunities. Assembly work or craft work often requires the investment of hundreds of dollars in equipment and supplies, as well as many hours to produce goods for a company that has promised to buy them.

Multi-level marketing (MLM) companies are another type of business “opportunity” that frequently use the Internet and telemarketing operations to lure participants. MLM businesses claim they are marketing a product, but they are actually marketing a scheme in which earnings are based on the number of new individuals recruited into the program, not on the quality of the product. These companies entice prospective participants with promises that they will have their own business, establish their own work hours and earn enough money to purchase a new car or boat, pay for their children’s education or take a fabulous vacation. Promoters claim these pyramid schemes are legal because a product or service is being offered.

Every year, thousands of consumers lose money to telemarketing/Nigerian/investment con artists. Some companies that sell items over the phone are legitimate, but many are not. Many consumers become willing victims believing they can actually realize financial gain from a simple phone call or email. Then, one questions which side is the greedier--the scammer or the scammed?
