    Winston Churchill: The Biography

The year was 1930, before Hitler even rose to power as dictator of Germany. Winston Churchill dominated the conversation about Nazi Germany for many years, gradually gaining support for his opposition to Hitler until Britain’s patriotism reached a fever pitch.

England loved Churchill. Soon, Americans loved him too. Britain needed a hero, maybe all the Western World needed someone to follow into battle. Churchill stepped up and took charge. He led them through the war and stayed with them on the other side of it.

Yet, some historians call Churchill a warmonger. They believe he precipitated the war in England and was responsible for the unnecessary deaths of thousands of innocent German civilians in the bombing of Dresden. They see him as a man who wanted to manipulate the world to please bankers and financiers and promote his personal agenda of gaining political power.

So, what’s the real story? Did Churchill cause World War II? Or did he rally the West to prevent Hitler from conquering Europe for good?

The question is a difficult one. Churchill’s own words could be used to support either assertion. Each person in each country has a unique perspective that partly has to do with whether their leaders sided with the Allied Forces or the Axis.

Delving into Churchill’s life during and after the war is a good first step to sorting out the reality of Churchill’s impact on world politics in that war era. However, to really know who Churchill was, you also need to be familiar with his childhood, youth and early adulthood. You need to know about his actions in the cold war and even his final days to have a full understanding.

Winston Churchill, a vastly influential man, cannot be summed up in one book or even several volumes. In fact, his official biographer has written over 30 books about him. Therefore, this book provides but a brief and balanced introduction to the life of Churchill, his victories and defeats, and the controversies that have surrounded his legacy in recent years.
