    SAMPLE PROMPTS

    Cars, Trains, & Vehicles
Create a scenario in which a child from a rural area and a child from the city change places for the day. What does the country child think about public transportation (buses, subway trains, etc.)? Likewise, how does the city character view tractors, ATVs, and other vehicles not found in the city? What can each child learn from the experience?

    School
Share two versions of your character’s first day of school. In one, everything goes perfectly. In the other, his biggest fears come true. What does each scenario reveal about your character? Which aspects of school remain the same in both situations? What message can you impart to your readers about taking this important step in life?

    NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR

If you're in a creative rut, know that I've been there, too. I spent far too long struggling with my inability to write, and it negatively affected several aspects of my life. That's why I wrote 100 Children’s, Teen, and Young Adult Writing Prompts – because I know what it's like to feel creatively empty, and I want to help other writers beat their own blocks.

In this booklet, I've combined techniques from my days in university (I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing) with the real-world lessons I learned from writing my own fiction novels. The result? A list of 100 prompts to get your creative gears spinning. But that's all I can do. The rest is up to you.
